Are Gutter Guards Worth It?
A straight answer: often yes, but they are not a substitute for maintenance, and they are not right for every property.
Here is a straightforward breakdown of what they do, and when they are (and are not) worth the cost.
What gutter guards actually do
A mesh guard sits over the top of the gutter and stops larger debris — leaves, twigs, moss clumps — from getting in, while still letting water through. They do not stop everything: fine grit, seeds, and needles from conifers can still work their way through most mesh types over time.
The benefits
The main benefit is reduced frequency, not elimination, of cleaning. A property that needed clearing twice a year might only need an occasional check once guards are fitted. They also reduce the amount that collects in the downpipes, since less debris gets into the system in the first place.
The limitations
Guards are not maintenance-free. Fine silt and moss can still build up on top of or underneath the mesh over a year or two, and an occasional check is still worthwhile. They also will not fix an existing problem — fitting guards over gutters that already have a fall or bracket issue just hides the debris while the underlying fault continues.
When they make sense
Properties near mature trees, especially deciduous ones that drop a lot of leaves in autumn, tend to see the biggest benefit. If you are cleaning gutters more than twice a year because of nearby trees, guards are usually a sound investment.
When they might not be worth it
If your gutters rarely block in the first place, or if they need repair work before anything else, guards are not the priority. See our gutter guard installation page for what is involved, or gutter repairs if yours needs fixing first.
