Cast Iron vs uPVC Guttering: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Plenty of homes across Farnham and the older parts of Farnborough still have their original cast iron guttering. Here is how it compares to modern uPVC.
If you own a period property, there is a good chance you are dealing with cast iron guttering rather than the uPVC found on most modern estates. Both do the same basic job, but they behave very differently day to day.
Cast iron guttering
Cast iron was the standard choice for most of the 19th and early 20th century, and a lot of it is still in service today — which says something about its durability. It is heavy, rigid, and when properly maintained can last decades longer than uPVC. The trade-off is that it needs regular repainting to stop it rusting, the joints can corrode and start leaking over time, and repairs generally need a specialist rather than a standard uPVC-only fitter.
uPVC guttering
uPVC has been the standard for new-build and replacement guttering for decades. It does not rust, needs no painting, is significantly lighter and cheaper to buy and install, and individual sections are easy to source and replace. It is generally less durable overall than well-maintained cast iron, and can become brittle with UV exposure after many years, but for most homes it is the lower-maintenance, lower-cost option.
Maintenance differences
Cast iron needs periodic repainting (usually every few years) to protect it from rust, and joints should be checked for movement or leaks. uPVC needs no painting at all — maintenance is really just keeping it clear of debris and checking brackets have not sagged over time. Both need regular clearing; neither is exempt from that.
Should you replace cast iron with uPVC?
Not necessarily. Original cast iron is often part of a period property's character, and on listed or conservation-area buildings there may be restrictions on what you can replace it with — always worth checking with your local authority before changing anything on a listed building. If your cast iron is sound and just needs cleaning and repainting, restoring it is usually more appropriate than replacing it. If it is heavily corroded, leaking at multiple joints, or missing sections, uPVC replacement is often the more practical long-term option.
Either way, they need cleaning
Whichever you have, blocked gutters cause the same problems — overflow, damp and damaged brickwork. We clean both cast iron and uPVC guttering, and treat older cast-iron joints with extra care rather than forcing a vacuum through a damaged one. See our gutter cleaning page, or gutter repairs if yours needs fixing rather than just clearing.
