Gutter Clearance vs Gutter Cleaning: What Is the Difference?
The two terms get used interchangeably, but they describe different jobs — and booking the wrong one can mean a second visit.
The two terms get used interchangeably — booking the wrong one can mean a second visit.
What counts as a clean
A routine gutter clean is what most properties need once or twice a year: clearing normal seasonal debris — leaves, twigs, general grit — with a ground-based vacuum, and flow-testing the downpipes. It is a maintenance visit, typically 45–90 minutes.
What counts as a clearance
A gutter clearance is for gutters that have been neglected for a long time — often two years or more — where debris has compacted, moss or even small plants are growing in the gutter, and a vacuum alone will not shift it. It usually needs hand-clearing as well as vacuuming, and takes longer as a result.
How to tell which you need
If your gutters get cleaned roughly annually and you just want them kept on top of, that is a clean. If you cannot remember the last time they were touched, or you can see plant growth or standing debris from the ground, that is a clearance. When in doubt, tell us how long it has been — we would rather quote accurately than turn up with the wrong equipment.
What happens if you book the wrong one
Booking a routine clean on badly neglected gutters usually means the vacuum cannot shift compacted material properly, and the job either takes longer than planned or needs a follow-up visit. We would always rather confirm which one you need before booking — see our pricing guide for typical costs of each.
