How to Spot Fascia and Soffit Damage Before It Gets Worse
Fascia and soffit problems often start small and hidden behind the gutter line. Here is what to look for from ground level.
Fascias and soffits do not get looked at as often as gutters, mostly because they are less obviously functional — but damage here can lead to bigger problems if it is left unchecked.
What fascias and soffits actually do
The fascia is the board running along the edge of the roof that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the panel underneath, closing the gap between the wall and the roofline. Together they protect the roof timbers from water and pests, and give the gutter something solid to attach to.
Signs of damage to look for
From the ground, look for: black streaks or green algae staining (usually cosmetic, but worth cleaning — see our fascia and soffit cleaning page); visible sagging or gaps where the fascia meets the gutter; peeling paint or swelling on timber fascias, which usually means water is getting behind it; and gutters that seem to be pulling away, since a failing fascia often cannot hold brackets securely.
Why small damage becomes big damage
A fascia's job is partly to keep water away from the roof timbers behind it. Once water gets behind a cracked or rotten fascia, it can reach those timbers, and repairs go from a straightforward board replacement to something involving the roof structure itself. Catching it while it is still cosmetic or minor is significantly cheaper than catching it late.
Cleaning vs replacing
Algae and grime on uPVC fascias is purely cosmetic and a soft-wash clean brings it back to white. Sagging, cracking or rotten timber is a repair issue, not a cleaning one — see gutter repairs if that is what you are seeing.
